... only 22,000 live sheep have left Australia for slaughter since 6 June. In the same period last year, 555,000 sheep were loaded onto ships and sent to the Middle East - most would face fully conscious slaughter, along with the cattle who were loaded with them. That's a hell of a lot of sheep who were at least spared the voyage.
And that's thanks to Fazal Ullah - the brave Pakistani trainee officer who couldn't stand by and watch the suffering without doing something about it; thanks to Animals Australia who put their all into pursuing justice for those and millions more sheep; thanks to 60 Minutes for airing the footage, thanks to certain MPs and Senators for trying to get a just Bill passed in parliament, thanks to the journalists who covered the issue without bias, and thanks to YOU - every single one of you who turned up at a protest, or phoned or emailed or wrote to your MP or Senator, or signed a petition.
We have never been this close to seeing an end to the live sheep trade - even a speaker at the Pastoralists and Graziers Association conference in Perth this week referred to the trade as a "dead man walking".
To that end, in this political climate, we need the EIGHTH ANNUAL HUMAN CHAIN to be the biggest we have ever seen. If you have ever thought about attending but not made it, THIS is the year you need to commit.
