Outrage at Fremantle Port: Heatwave Loading and Injured Animals on Live Export Ships
This past week, Fremantle Port became the stage for two shocking incidents that highlight the cruelty and systemic failures within the live export industry. Both the Gudali Express and the Maysora have been linked to serious breaches of animal welfare standards, leaving animals to endure immense suffering. Cattle Forced to Load in Extreme Heat On Monday, 23 December 2024, cattle were loaded onto the Gudali Express in heatwave conditions, with temperatures at Fremantle Port reaching between 38–41°C. Bos indicus cattle, renowned for their heat tolerance, were subjected to inhumane levels of...
Advocacy group sounds alarm over cattle boarding ship in scorching heat
Not-for-profit organisation Stop Live Exports has condemned the loading of scores of cattle onto a ship off Perth’s coast during a scorching hot summer day. On Monday, cattle were witnessed being loaded onto the Gudali Express at Fremantle Port where temperatures nearby soared into the high 30s to low 40s. The Gudali Express is a live export vessel that has the capacity to transport thousands of cattle. Stop Live Export spokesperson Ruth Gourley said: “It’s absolutely outrageous and intolerable that cattle are being loaded onto a ship at Fremantle Port on such an unbearably hot day. "Moving...
Resumption of live animal export would be a huge step backwards, say NZ Maritime Union
Live animal export is an unpleasant, outdated trade that is at complete odds with New Zealand’s image as a progressive, environmentally conscious and ethical producer, according to Victor Billot, Communications Officer from the Maritime Union of New Zealand “We’ve had problems in the past importing fuel from the northern hemisphere due to ships travelling through the tropics, so I can’t begin to imagine the suffering of live animals as they are shipped through incredible extremes in temperatures,” he says. “When we discussed the issue as a union, even our wharfies were concerned about animal...

Albanese defends live export ban amidst criticism, citing strong public support and animal welfare concerns
With permission, we reproduce below an article from AALE (Australians Against Live Export) regarding Prime Minister Albanese's 6PR radio interview on 18 June, 2024 strongly defending his Government's position to end the live export of sheep by sea, by May 2028. Meanwhile, Peter Dutton's Opposition continues to oppose the ban, even in the face of live sheep export disasters/debacles like the 2017 Awassi Express and the 2024 M.V Bahijah. Bahijah animals arrive in Israel to meet their fate
MEDIA RELEASE After more than three months in transit, the 14,000+ Australian animals on board the MV Bahijah have arrived in Israel. 14,000 sheep and 2,000 cattle first left Fremantle on 5 January, and about 13,700 sheep and 550 cattle endured the second attempt to reach the Middle East. Stop Live Exports spokesperson Rebecca Tapp said the tragedy represented more than mortality rates and was additional proof that the live export trade is inherently risky. “The animals were sent into a known conflict zone,” she said. “They were then ordered to return to Australia where they languished off...
Changing hearts and minds at the Hyde Park Festival
We recently took our message to the streets, hosting a stall at the popular Hyde Park Festival in North Perth over two days. Thank you to our wonderful volunteers who gave up their time to help us raise awareness and funds to help the victims of live export! The stall was a huge success, generating a lot of interest from the public, new memberships, petition signatures, and bringing in much needed funds from donations and the sale of our merchandise. It was lovely to meet some more of our supporters at the event in person too! 🙂 Events like this require resourcing. Please continue to donate...
Sign our petition to Premier Roger Cook
As part of our ongoing campaigning, we’ve developed a petition urging the Western Australian State Government to support an end to live sheep exports by sea. We call upon Premier Cook to join his fellow Australians, and his Federal counterparts, in supporting the end of this cruel trade and transitioning to a more humane, sustainable and ethical alternative, a position that would be consistent with the 2022 WA Labor Platform 82–83 regarding live export, that recognised that “there are strong economic, jobs and animal welfare reasons for transitioning from the live export trade to domestic...
Help spread the word on social media
Our social media campaigning continues, but so does the live export industry’s. They have many more funds and resources than us – please help us be a loud, constant voice for the animals by following us on Facebook, Instagram or X (Twitter) and share our posts far and wide! Please also use your voice to let the decision-makers know you want live exports to end! We’ve made it easy for you by providing their contact details in the comment sections of our Facebook posts.
Federal Cabinet Meeting Perth Rally
When Prime Minister Anthony Albanese and his Ministers came to Perth for their Federal Cabinet meeting, we were there to remind them that the majority of Australians want live export to end – sooner rather than later! As part of our campaign we had brand new signage targeting the PM made, to ensure he received our message loud and clear! Thank you to fierce animal welfare advocate Senator Mehreen Faruqi, who dropped everything to fly across the country to lend her support, and to our stalwart supporter, State Member for South Metropolitan Region Brad Pettitt MLC, who once again took time out...
