Stop Live Exports Western Australia thanks Stop Live Exports South Africa (SLESA) and Australian veterinarian Dr Lynn Simpson for sharing a powerful and deeply informed presentation delivered this week to the South African Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Agriculture.
Dr Simpson, one of the world’s most experienced live-export veterinarians, having accompanied 57 long-haul livestock voyages, provided expert testimony on the mechanical, environmental, and inherent welfare risks that make the live export trade impossible to render humane.

We thank SLESA for making this important briefing publicly accessible.
In her statement to MPs, Dr Simpson was unequivocal:
“There is no way this trade can be fixed or managed to provide an acceptable risk to the animals involved. Mass numbers of animals cannot be safely and reliably exported long distance by sea without experiencing unnecessary suffering.”
Her testimony holds extraordinary weight. Very few veterinarians have witnessed, first-hand, the realities aboard export vessels, and even fewer have been willing to speak publicly about them.
